Spain taking their places in the European good drawing room

22/12/2008 - Both Men's and Women's ETTU Cup competitions selected the top-four teams during last weekend quarter-finals. It was really a sad weekend for the French men's teams, since all three (Pontoise Cergy, Caen and Istrest) lost. Whilst Caen's home defeat was a very sharp 0:3 against Victoria Moscow, Istres was having less hopes having to play on Russian field against Fakel Orenburg, and they also lost 3:0.

The most balanced match was in Spain, and hosting Borges Group Vall finally achieved an impressive 3:2 win against Pontoise Cergy. After HU Bin success in the first encounter against FRANZ (3:0), BAGGALEY become the true match-winner since he defeated either CHIANG and FRANZ (scoring 3:2 twice).

Together with the Spanish team and the two Russian clubs, also German Plüderhausen stepped ahead after a sharp 3:0 victory against Russian UMMC. KOSOWSKI, LEUNG Chu and KARAKASEVIC played a strong match, and the Russian could not skip out such a heavy defeat despite PRIMORAC and CHITCHETININE experience.

Even in the Women's tournament Spain got their place in the good drawing room, thanks to the impressive Himoinsa Cartagena win in Novgorod (3:2), thanks to LIE Jie strongly pushing her team to the semis. Once more title-holder Vladivostok went ahead thank to their opponent's no-show: France's Kremlin Bicetre was forced to withdraw because of visa problems.

Further away wins allowed qualification to Mondeville (3:0 in the all-French match vs. Grand Quevilly) and Polish Forbet Tarnobrzeg who passed through St. Berthevin with a suffered 3:2 score.

Classificació històrica. El Borges Grup Vall es va classificar ahir per disputar les semifinals de l'ETTU Cup després de superar el potent Pontoise francès per 3-2. El club de les Garrigues, que va comptar amb el suport de prop d'un miler d'aficionats que van omplir el pavelló Francesc Macià de les Borges Blanques, va tenir com a gran baluard l'anglès Andrew Baggaley, que va guanyar els seus dos partits individuals, un d'ells contra el taiwanès i exnúmero tres del món, Chiang Peng Lung .
